Meet Yiannis Morgan Hochanda Presenter

Yiannis Morgan Hochanda Presenter

Engaging with Viewers and Crafting at Hochanda

Yiannis was born in Cyprus but moved to the UK at the tender age of two. A mixture of Greek/Irish parentage, he inherited a distinctive Mediterranean look to go along with the Irish gift of the gab – both of which have served him well in his chosen career path.

An only child, and never one to shy away from the limelight, it’s not surprising he soon found himself drawn to the stage. This passion reflected in his education, as he eventually went on to study Film/Performing Arts at Winchester University – graduating with a BA Honours Degree.

Yiannis has had a varied career as actor, writer and TV Host, working at the heart of the British Film/TV industry for some of the biggest names in the business; that includes Warner Bros, Sky, BBC, Endemol, Hochanda…

By his own admission, Yiannis was relatively new to the world of Crafting when he joined Hochanda, though he quickly caught the bug. Make sure you tune in as he lets his ‘Crafty’ side loose live on your screens.

SOME OF MY FAVOURITE THINGS

Food:

I have recently started to explore a Vegan lifestyle. It has only been a few months but I am really enjoying my new plant-based creations - I make a mean Dahl, even if I do say so myself.

Drink:

At the risk of sounding like a total health bore, I love homemade smoothies and green tea.

Film:

I am a massive film buff. As a kid I often lost myself in a good movie, a habit I continue to this day. I love all genres: romcom, action, horror, drama, fantasy… It just depends what mood I am in.

Actor/Actress:

There are some actors you can’t help but admire. I am a big Al Pacino fan. His performance in ‘Scent of a Woman’ was a masterclass. Here’s a lesser known movie fact about me. I actually worked on Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. I was part of the production team and it meant I got to meet some absolute legends, Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Robbie Coltrane, Kenneth Branagh and a very young Daniel Radcliffe.

Book:

I love to read autobiographies. Some of my favourites have been Charlie Chaplin, Mahatma Gandhi, Christopher Reeve, Nelson Mandela, Albert Einstein to name a few.

Animal:

I know a lot of us are either cat or dog lovers. I am a fan of them both equally. There are sadly no animals currently in the Morgan household, but that may be changing soon.

Q&A SESSION WITH Yiannis

When did you first discover your love for arts and craft?

I used to love art at school, but that was a long time ago. I think I rediscovered my love for arts and crafts when I was fortunate enough to join Hochanda.

When you’re crafting do you have a favourite snack?

Crafting is always better with a few snacks. Give me some dark chocolate or a piece of cake and I’m a happy boy.

What’s your favourite hot beverage (e.g. type coffee, tea, hot chocolate)?

I have not had a coffee since last November. I was drinking way too many cups a day so thought I would take a break. My hot drink of choice these days is Green Tea.

While you’re crafting do you like to have music on, if so what type and do you find it helps your creativity?

I actually like to have the TV on in the background. Believe it or not, I turn on Hochanda. It’s nice hearing friendly voices chatting while you craft.

Do you have favourite place to craft in the home (e.g. a dedicated craft room, in the kitchen, living room etc)?

So I have turned the spare bedroom into a craft room. It didn’t take me long to take over the room once I joined Hochanda. It’s amazing how quickly your crafty stash can grow.

What’s your top crafting tip?

My biggest tip is enjoy yourself. Crafting is not a competition. Don't compare what you make to anyone else's inspirations. If you are having fun and enjoying your crafting, then you're winning. If you ever fall out with anything you are making, it happens to us all, put it to one side for a while. A little break and a fresh pair of eyes can work wonders.

What is your funniest on-screen moment?

There have been so many, but hands down it has to be when I was presenting with Leonie and wrapped a piece of silk around myself to see if it would make a good dress. Unfortunately the silk showed off more than I intended – if you saw it, you’d know what I meant. It took me a long time to live that down, but Leonie and I had a really good laugh about it. Let’s just say I won’t be doing that again.

Tell us an interesting fact about yourself?

Here’s a good fact for you. My old boss at Sky was none other than E. L. James of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’, fame!
